We recognise that smoking remains the number one cause of preventable deaths in the Guildford area.

We are, as a member of Guildford’s Local Strategic Partnership, determined:

• to reduce the prevalence of smoking in our area
• to educate and inform local people about the dangers of smoking and second-hand smoke
• to encourage and support smokers who want to give up, and to promote local ‘stop smoking’ services
• to protect non-smokers from the damaging effects of second-hand smoke
• to enforce the law on advertising and sale of tobacco products to minors

We will endeavour to ensure that action on smoking is a core part of the work of:

• sport and leisure strategies and safety programmes
• local health and strategic partnerships
• social inclusion initiatives
• workforce health programmes

We will progress bids for Government and European funding using these within the priorities stated.

We believe that protecting and improving the health and safety of local people is a top priority for our Council.
