Preparing for emergencies

The risk of a major emergency is low.  However if it happens, you'll want to be prepared.

Surrey Alert (this page opens in a new window)  is an innovative new way of sharing and providing information to Surrey in an emergency.

Advice leaflet
Surrey Local Resilience Forum (SLRF) has produced a useful leaflet.  Called 'Emergency, emergency, emergency', the leaflet looks at a range of issues including major risks, and how to prepare.

Tips include:

  • Insuring possessions and property,
  • keeping a battery powered or wind-up torch and radio in case the power is cut off,
  • maintaining a supply of fresh bottled water and ready to eat food that doesn’t need cooking,
  • keeping a list of useful phone numbers (eg GP, local council, utility companies) to hand,
  • identifying the special needs of any vulnerable people living with you and knowing how to support them if an emergency happens,
  • having a well stocked first-aid kit,
  • knowing how to switch off gas, electricity and water supplies and being sure to do this if asked to leave your home,
  • in the case of a major emergency, if you can, tuning into local radio or tv for regular updates and advice.
