Abuse of adults is a terrible, hidden and often ignored, problem in society. The profile of child abuse has been dramatically raised in the past few years, and the Government is now taking steps to ensure the same high profile to protecting vulnerable adults.
Abuse can happen anywhere. It may happen when an adult lives alone or with relatives, in a nursing home, in residential or day care setting, in hospitals or in the person's own home. There are many types of abuse but the key signs to look out are:
- Unexplained injury
- Signs of fear or distress
- Withdrawn
- Neglect
- Theft, Fraud or Financial exploitation
In partnership with other organisations - such as the police, health, and Surrey county council - we at Guildford council aim to protect and support vulnerable people. By this we mean anyone over the age of 18 years who:
- May be at risk because of mental, physical or learning disability, age or illness
- Cannot always take care of themselves, or protect himself or herself against harm or exploitation.
