New Visions - Exhibition of Prints and Print Making

New Visions explores European and English prints and printmaking techniques from 1620 to 1931. The exhibition illustrates society's changing views of seeing the world and itself and the cult of personality. Learn more about mezzotint, stipple and line engravings, and other printing techniques illustrated by rare black and white works by a variety of artists. From 18-25 November 2005 and 6-13 January 2007 additional prints and engravings from the Borough Collection will be on display in the Garden Room.
KS2 Art & Design – The visit will include an examination of the different print techniques employed to get different effects and the processes used. There will also be discussion of the role of artists and engravers in different societies and periods and a comparison of other artists’ works.

Victorian Valentines from the Shell Collection
20 January to 17 February 2007
A fascinating collection of over 200 Victorian Valentine cards liberally decorated with satin ribbons, gilt cupids and lace paper. Romance and sentiment feature heavily, countered by satirical cartoons with cruel verses in the style of Cruikshank and Rowlandson expressing bitterness and disenchantment of loves lost.
KS2 History – the gallery visit would also include a brief history of the Valentine card; and a discussion on how ideas have changed eg type of images used eg a dead bird conveyed true love! The visit would also look at the role of the Valentine and other cards in courtship and the popularity of sending valentine cards helped by development in printing and the development of postal system, particularly the introduction of the postage stamp.
Guildford Borough Collection - Historic Images of Guildford

Examples of works in different media from the Borough Collection, to celebrate the history of Guildford. To coincide with the 400th anniversary of Guildford Corporation.
KS2 History – visits to the gallery for this exhibition will be particularly relevant for looking at Victorian Britain, and Britain since 1930s and the local history aspects of the curriculum.The visit to the gallery will also include a tour of Guildford House itself, a 17th century building (Grade I Listed status) highlighting how the use of the building has changed over the centuries.
Shakespeare : Frozen in Time

An exhibition of posters, prints and photographs of British actors performing in Shakespeare plays from the 1780s –1920s.
KS2 History – a gallery visit will put the exhibition in a historical context and will recognize that the past is represented in different ways and that art is one way to look at the past.
KS2 Art & Design a gallery visit would also look at styles and traditions considering whether the theatrical productions use period interpretation and costumes or contemporary interpretation, difference in intention between paintings or prints compared to photographs which may be being used in reportage style (in the style of ‘snaps’) rather than carefully composed artworks.
