Key Stage 1 & 2 History

A visit to Guildford House Gallery would be particularly relevant when studying:
Unit 2: What were homes like a long time ago?
A visit to Guildford House Gallery would provide a structure for this unit, which looks at similarities and differences between homes today and homes in the past in the local history context. Guildford House Gallery was built in 1660 and was a family home for first John Childe and his family (John Childe was three times Mayor of Guildford). It then became the home of the Martyr family for a century from 1736 and from the mid 1840s became business premises. It opened as Guildford's Art Gallery in 1959. Features of the building and stories about home life are used to enable the children to develop criteria to distinguish old from new, and to learn about life at a time beyond living memory.
Visits would include opportunities to:
-
Learn about ideas about ideas, beliefs, attitudes and experiences of people in the past from works of art and Guildford House Gallery as a historic building
-
Sketch and draw from observation
-
Comparing how life has changed or stayed the same.

Unit 18: What was it like to live here in the past?
Guildford House Gallery could be selected along with other local historic sites, such as the Castle, as the focus of the unit. This gives opportunity for direct access to historical sources and is an excellent chance to develop fieldwork and research skills. The unit also provides the opportunity to consider citizenship issues such as planning for changes, conservation, local identity and social responsibility.
Visits would include opportunities to:
-
Use maps to show how our area has changed.
-
Look at how Guildford House Gallery can tell us about the past
-
Use pictures and photographs to tell us about past life at Guildford House.
-
Sketch, draw and observe.
-
Discussion of what was it like to live at Guildford House Gallery and in Guildford in the past.
