Guildford Museum's collections of archaeology, local history and needlework have strong links with the history curriculum and potential for the development of cross-curricular themes. Outlined below are some of the curriculum areas for which a visit to Guildford Museum is relevant.
Keystage 1
The collections and displays are suitable for a wide range of themes relating to everyday life e.g. homes, clothes, diet, transport and entertainment over a period of time i.e. Stone Age to Victorian times. Slide talks and handling sessions using museum objects are available for the above themes. Alternatively the museum's resources can be used as a focus for the study of historical source material.
Keystage 2 - Invaders and Settlers - Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Vikings in Britain
The museum's collections and displays are particularly suitable for understanding the changes which took place following the Roman and Anglo Saxon invasions of Britain. Slide talks and work with selected museum objects are available. The subject may be treated as a whole, giving pupils the opportunity to study change over time and to make comparisons and draw conclusions from material evidence. If preferred, the Romans and Saxons can be treated as individual study units.
Keystage 2 - Tudor and Stuart Times
The museum can provide talks on Tudor and Stuart Guildford and slide talks and handling sessions on 16th and 17th Century life.
Keystage 2 - Victorian Britain
The local history and needlework collections and displays are relevant to studies on Victorian Britain, and are particularly useful as a resource for a local study unit on Victorian Guildford. The Victorian Childhood displays provide an invaluable resource for not only the history curriculum but the curriculum as a whole. There are also displays on well-known personalities of the period such as Lewis Carroll and Gertrude Jekyll. Slide talks and handling sessions are available on the period as a whole or as a local history study unit. In addition, themes such as houses and home life, public health, the growth of towns etc, can be studied as individual topics - please discuss your requirements with the members of staff concerned.
Keystage 3 - The Roman Empire
The Roman displays may be used as a focus for the study of life in the Roman province of Britannia. Slide talks and handling sessions are available on Britain as part of the Empire, including Roman culture and its legacy.
Keystage 3 - Medieval Realms: Britain 1066 to 1500
The museum's medieval collections and displays are particularly strong, and together with Guildford Castle provide an invaluable teaching resource. Slide talks and handling sessions are available on the period as a whole or on individual aspects of medieval life. Members of staff can assist with studies on historic buildings.
