Walk to school

Did you know?
At the peak school travel time of 8.50am, nearly 1 in 5 cars on the urban roads are taking children to school. (National Travel Survey)

Walking Bus

Walking to school is a great way to keep fit, to help the environment and to learn important road safety skills.

We want to encourage parents to walk to school with their young children as often as possible. For more information visit the Walk to school website (this page opens in a new window).

What can your school do?
You school could develop a school travel plan to show your commitment to environmental and community concerns.

The plan might set out measures you could take to reduce the number of car trips made by parents, staff and pupils and to improve the safety of the journey to school. Visit the Sustrans website (this page opens in a new window)  for further details of safe routes to school and for help with developing your own travel plan.

If your school is interested in developing a school travel plan please visit the Surrey County Council website (this page opens in a new window).

A Walking Bus is any scheme where children are walked to school in an organised group, usually led by volunteer parents. A Walking Bus can be included in a school travel plan. If your school is interested in setting up a walking bus, please contact your local road safety officer Pippa James on 01483 517303.

Health benefits
Cars have a damaging effect on health, mainly in terms of pollution and traffic injuries. Cars also encourage a less active way of life. Walking or cycling to school will not only make you more healthy, it will also help us to achieve a cleaner and more sustainable environment by reducing pollution and traffic congestion.

For more information on the health benefits of walking or cycling to school see the Wired for health website (this page opens in a new window).
