Ripley is an historic village 5 miles north-east of Guildford on the old A3 trunk road. Established well before 1180, Ripley's growth and develoment through the ages has always had some historical significance. Firstly, an important stopping point for travellers sailers and Admirals on their way to the strategic port of Portsmouth.
In the 18th Century Ripley was signifcant in the formation of the game of cricket and now boasts one of the oldest clubs in England. Over 250 years old, it is sited on the village green reputed to be the largest in England.
In the 19th Century, Ripley became famous as a Mecca for cyclists, being an ideal distance from London for those using the new and strange method of transport. Eric Clapton, the well known musician, was born in Ripley and still keeps in touch with the village.
Ripley continues to be significant as a place to visit with its varied architecture, listed buildings, its collection of ancient public houses and restaurants and its major annual event the Ripley bonfire.
Today the Parish has an active Parish Council which maintains the day to day running of the village whilst working hard to protect this unique Parish and its community from the threats of the modern world.
