West Clandon Parish Council

The village of West Clandon was first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as "Clanedune" - meaning "clean down", an area of bare open downland without trees or scrub.

West Clandon's first church was built in Anglo-Saxon times using local timber but was replaced in about 1180 with present building dedicated to St Peter and St Paul.

During the 18 century, the Parish of West Clandon was jointly owned by one of Surrey's biggest landowners - the Locke King family of Weybridge and the Onslow family, who have lived at their ancestoral home Clandon Park since 1642.

Clandon Park House was built by the 2nd Baron Onslow in 1731 and designed by the venetian architect Giacomo Leoni, with gardens laid out in 1775 by the famous designer Capability Brown. This fine Palladian mansion has been owned by the National Trust since 1956 and is open to visitors from April  until  September each year.

Today, West Clandon - with its two pubs, railway station and ancient church -consists of 468 houses and has an estimated population of 1300 people.
