The name Worplesdon is derived from "wepels" a bridle-way and "dun" a hill and was first mentioned in the Domesday Book.  The parish of Worplesdon covers 35 square miles and comprises of four villages, Fairlands, Jacobs Well, Wood Street and Worplesdon (incorporating Pitch Place, Perry Hill and Rickford).

There are approximately 3,500 properties in the parish including 22 listed buildings.

A doctors' surgery, two schools (one primary and one infant), three village halls, three churches, two hotels, eight pubs, three post offices and numerous shops and businesses provide plenty of facilities for local residents.

Many activities take place in the Parish including tennis, badminton, cricket, football, amateur dramatics, brownies, scouts and art classes to name a few!  Fairwood Helpers offers a life-line to elderly and infirm residents providing driving services and friendship.

Archaeological finds have included a Bronze Age barrow (Whitmoor Common), a Roman Farm and Roman Villa (Broad Street Common - Site of Nature Conservation Importance (SNCI)).

There are nine commons in the Parish including Whitmoor Common which forms part of the Thames Basin Heath Special Protection Area (TBHSPA), Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and Local Nature Reserve (LNR).

The Parish Council was awarded Quality Status in October 2007 and comprises of sixteen councillors and two members of staff.  Full Council meetings are held on the 4th Thursday of the Month (excluding August and December).
