Councillors' allowances

Guildford Borough councillors are not paid salaries for the time they spend working on Council business and representing the interests of local residents.  Instead, they are entitled to allowances by law.  A basic allowance is paid to all councillors.  Special responsibility allowances are paid to those councillors who have significant additional responsibilities, over and above the generally accepted duties of a councillor.  Councillors entitled to a special responsibility allowance include the Leader of the Council, Lead Members, and committee chairmen.

An independent remuneration panel undertakes a periodic review of the scheme of allowances and makes its recommendations to the Council.

Following the Panel's review of the scheme of allowances in 2007, a new scheme was approved by the Council on 6 December 2007 which came into effect on 1 April 2008.
