Car label scheme

New cars sold in the borough are now labelled with details of their environmental credentials.

The car label [PDF] (116kb) shows buyers how much carbon is produced by different cars, helping them choose a more environmentally friendly vehicle.

The scheme is part of a voluntary agreement between the government and the Society of Motor Manufacturers, and all dealers nationwide will display the labels.

New technology has led to the creation of cars that produce less carbon, but with car sales increasing year on year emissions continue to be a problem.

However, now that alternative fuels such as liquefied petroleum gas and bio fuels are becoming increasingly available, environmental experts hope people will be encouraged to think about the environment when buying a new car.

Purchases will be monitored through both Guildford car showrooms and online car websites, to see if local residents and businesses are choosing cleaner cars.

Councillor Jenny Wicks says:

"Buying a low-carbon car will help to reduce climate change, which is caused in part by carbon emitted by cars.  We hope this initiative will encourage people to think about the environment as well as style and performance when choosing a new car".
