The Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy step by step guide for Householders is now available to download. A full information pack is also available from the climate change team who can be contacted using the details at the bottom of this page.
There are now a number of renewable energy technologies which can provide some or all of the energy needs of households. They can also be used by businesses, and there are tax advantages so that the payback to a business should actually be shorter. Businesses will also reduce their exposure to the Climate Change Levy, a tax on the use of fossil fuels. Please visit the Climate Change Levy website (this page opens in a new window) for more information. Most of these technologies are suitable to fit on to a house that has already been built, while some, specifically ground source heat pumps, are only suitable for new dwellings.
The new Low Carbon Buildings Programme (this page opens in a new window) replaces the Clear Skies programme and it provides grants towards these technologies. However, applicants are now required to have carried out certain insulation measures before they can receive grant funding.
There are also issues here surrounding planning permission. Different technologies have a different planning position. Each one below includes specific guidance for residents thinking about installing renewable technologies on to their homes.
