Why it is important to the council?
The 2006 Government White Paper means that councils have a responsibility to:

• be environmental leaders in their communities, 
• promote sustainability through their policies and day-to-day activities.

More recently, government targets require local authorities to take action to reduce CO₂ emissions from:

• their own operations, 
• within the borough.

What are we doing?
We have a good record promoting sustainability. This includes:

• waste minimisation campaigns,
• supporting public transport and cycling,
• reducing CO₂ emissions from our buildings (for more information visit Salix 'invest to save' scheme),
• being accepted on the local authority carbon management programme, which will help the council achieve our climate change and sustainability targets.
