Hydro Project at the Toll House

The old Mill sited between the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre and the Mill Studio was built in 1770. The original turbines were replaced in 1930 when it was used to pump water until 1952. Some 50 years later the turbine is being replaced. The power of the water will generate enough electricity to power 50 average households per year and reduce carbon emissions by 120 tonnes per year.

The investment pay back period is approximately 10 years. Works started on 10 July and took eight weeks to complete. For further details please visit the Hydro Project pages.

Stoke Fields Environmental Improvements – Phase 3

As part of the environmental improvements for residents in the Stoke Fields area footpaths were re-laid in traditional materials, upgrading the quality of the streetscape in this conservation area.

Engineering Services were commissioned to design and construct footpaths though the residential area.  The pavements were reconstructed using a combination of engineering bricks in stretcher form and traditional diamond chequer pavers.

Setts were used to demark directional changes to the footpath whilst adding an architectural feature.

The stretcher courses were laid in line with existing structures such as garden walls and fences. The local community garden was also integrated into the scheme.

Additional features such as a ramp to the local flats and a new drain cover were also included.

Trinity Gate Environmental Improvements

The environmental enhancements to the front of Trinity Gate arose from the need to re-instate and upgrade the space in front of the Odeon Cinema which once stood next to this site.

The plans, drawn up in partnership with Surrey County Council and the developer Howard Holdings were devised to add interest to the area, and make it an enjoyable town centre space. Many people in Guildford have memories of the old cinema, so to commemorate the site, quotations from famous films have been incorporated into the paving to set the mind recalling the films, the building and happy times at the cinema - or even totally unrelated events!

The project was funded by Howard Holdings as a contribution towards the Council's adopted Percent for Art policy and this initiative reflects the council's commitment to improving residents' local surroundings, by focusing on issues that matter most to them such as a cleaner, safer and greener environment.

Sensory Gardens - Environmental Improvements

Improvements were made to the sensory gardens at Stoke Park. Engineering Services designed and constructed the footpaths shown in the photo.

The path is made of tarmac with chipping made from a locally sourced stone and is edged with red clay bricks.

Aesthetics, disabled access and durability were the main aims if the project.  These was achieved by design, the selection of the materials and the quality of the workmanship.
