Lighting strategy

Our lighting strategy aims to do the following:

  • Increase community safety and create a feeling of well being
  • Keep energy consumption to a minimum
  • Avoid light pollution
  • Improve Guildford's natural and built environment
  • Improve the appearance of areas of the borough at night
  • The strategy also coordinates small scale lighting projects that complement those that Surrey County Council carry out.

Surrey County Council have a statutory duty to maintain street lighting. To report a fault online contact Surrey County Council (this page opens in a new window).  You can also telephone Surrey County Council on 03456 009 009.

Phase 4 Lighting Strategy projects that have recently been completed include:

  • Footpath at Woodside/Linkway/Southway, Park Barn
  • Footpath at Barnwood, Park Barn
  • Pedestrian route from York Road to Allen House grounds
  • Eagle Road car park
  • East Horsley railway station approach
  • Alleyway at Shalford railway station

We are currently working on a scheme to enhance the Dennis roundabout area and also working in partnership with South Western Trains on improvements at West Clandon railway station.

Sutherland Memorial Park

Lamp lit at night

As part of our ongoing maintenance commitment the lamps at Sutherland Memorial car park have recently been replaced with energy efficient street lighting luminaires.  As well as energy saving, the quality of light is much improved.  In addition, six lamps on the steps to the rear of the YMCA building have been fitted with the latest in LED lighting technology.

Pedestrian footbridge adjacent to the Wooden Bridge Public House
A key pedestrian footbridge that crosses the A3 and Midleton Road has been given a new look thanks to the Projects and Conservation Team working in partnership with our Parks and Countryside Services.

Wooden Bridge planting scheme

The approach to the bridge, adjacent to The Wooden Bridge public house, is now landscaped and the general appearance has been enhanced, putting the finishing touches to this overall project.

An earlier phase of works included improvements to the lighting to brighten up the walkway and columns.  The lighting enhancements came about following a consultation with local residents who identified the area for improvement.

The scheme is part funded by the Queen Elizabeth Park development and is also part of our lighting strategy.

The work has been undertaken in liaison with the Highways Agency and Surrey County Council Structures department.
