North Street improvements

We are working with our partners to develop an ambitious programme of environmental improvements in North Street in conjunction with the recently approved proposals for the extended Friary Shopping Centre.

North Street has a number of problems including:

  • a poor quality visual environment,
  • high levels of pollution,
  • and conflicts between different user groups, including cyclists, pedestrians and the large numbers of vehicles using the street.

Currently, there is little space for pedestrians, and few if any trees or landscaping. The paved surfaces, seats, litter-bins and the market area all need improving.  It is intended to improve the environment for people who visit, shop and work in North Street and make it a place where people will want to linger and enjoy the surroundings.

Current proposals include:

  • changing the traffic priority route from North Street to Chertsey Street  - which will allow for the potential of a series of new public spaces by narrowing the road,
  • increasing the area for pedestrians and improving their safety,
  • reducing the impact of vehicles while creating improved public transport on-street facilities,
  • providing new lighting, paving, tree planting and street furniture including seating.

The street market is highly valued and will be retained with its environment improved.

These improvements will be phased over a period of approximately 5 years to align with the timescale for the re-development of the Friary Centre extension which also includes the creation of a new bus station.  Further information will be posted on this page.
