Our lighting strategy aims to do the following:
-
Increase community safety and create a feeling of well being
-
Keep energy consumption to a minimum
-
Avoid light pollution
-
Improve Guildford's natural and built environment
-
Improve the appearance of areas of the borough at night
-
The strategy also coordinates small scale lighting projects that complement those that Surrey County Council carry out.
-

Pedestrian footbridge adjacent to the Wooden Bridge Public House
Wooden Bridge, a key pedestrian footbridge that crosses the A3 and Midleton Road, adjacent to the Wooden Bridge Public House has been lit up as part of an enhancement project.
The project came about following a consultation with local residents who identified the area for improvement. The area was also identified in a previous Fear of Crime survey. The scheme is part funded by the Queen Elizabeth Park development and is also part of our lighting strategy.
So far, the walkway across the A3 has been illuminated to give a better sense of security, whilst feature uplighters project light onto the bridge support columns to give a more consistently lit ambience and to create a sense of arrival and landmark.

A second phase of the project will start in the autumn to improve the landscaping and general appearance of the approaches to the footbridge putting the finishing touches to the project.
The work has been undertaken in liaison with the Highways Agency and Surrey County Council Structures department.
