Friary Passage, a pedestrian footway linking the town to the riverside has been transformed. By removing the suspended ceiling to open up the space, combined with light enhancements and an eye catching new colour scheme the subway is now providing pedestrians a pleasurable route across town.
Friary Passage topped the priority list of subways identified by the Subway Working Group throughout the borough which needed enhancement.
The group, including Surrey Police, Guildford Borough Council and Surrey County Council recognised that the subway was prone to vandalism, and although relatively well lit, was unappealing as a route for pedestrians to and from the riverside.
We implemented the scheme through our rolling programme of environmental improvement projects.
