Haydon Place subway

An imaginative lighting scheme is the key feature of the refurbished Haydon Place subway, a vital pedestrian link between the town centre and residential areas to the north of York Road, Guildford.

Two purpose designed light columns have been installed at either end of the subway which have sensors that intensify the lighting and induce live colour changes when someone is in the subway.  This alerts anyone on the approaches of people already in the area, and is designed to enhance and improve the environment by making the subway a brighter, more attractive area and a safer place to use.

The lights were installed as an action by the Subways Working Group which has carried out other successful improvements to subways including Friary Passage and Shawfield Road, Ash.

The innovative lighting scheme has received a Highly Commended citation at the prestigious Lighting Design Awards 2008.  The Awards promote the importance and influence of good lighting, and commend energy efficiency and innovation in the design of the lit environment.  For more information view the Lighting Design Awards website (this page opens in a new window).
