Air pollution in Guildford

Air quality review and assessment
The Environment Act 1995 required Local Authorities to carry out annual reviews of air quality in their area.  Air Quality was required to be assessed against objectives set out in the Air Quality (England) (Amendment) Regulations 2002.

The first review and assessment for Guildford was published in November 2000.  Particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide and meteorological conditions are monitored by a mobile air quality monitoring station.  In addition, nitrogen dioxide is also monitored at a number of sites throughout the Borough using passive diffusion tubes.  The monitoring results and interpretation of those results can be found in the reports below:

Millennium report on air quality
Guildford has produced a millennium report on air quality in conjunction with Surrey authorities.  Copies are available on request.

Control of commercial emissions
Authorisation of certain industrial processes to control and reduce the emission of pollutants.  A register is kept with Environmental Health.

Air quality strategy
An Air Quality Strategy [PDF] (145k) has been published after a period of consultation during 2003.  The document sets out how Guildford should approach air quality from a strategic viewpoint.  The initiation is voluntary listing a number of initiatives which can be followed as a template for the future.
