Environmental control

Are there any byelaws about bonfires?
It is a common misconception that there are specific byelaws that prohibit garden bonfires or specific times they can be lit. Occasionally a bonfire is the best practicable way to dispose of garden waste that cannot be composted. However, where a neighbour is causing a problem by burning rubbish then the law is on your side. In practice, to be considered a statutory nuisance, a bonfire would have to be a persistent problem, interfering substantially with your well-being, comfort or the enjoyment of your property.

To make a complaint about a problem with bonfires contact us using the details at the bottom of this page.  To be able to have your complaint investigated, the following needs to be provided:

  • The exact address of where the bonfire is taking place.
  • The complainants details
  • How often the bonfire is occurring..

I have bought a property and I need to find out if there is any contamination on the land?
We hold a database of all known land which has past industrial or commercial use within the borough. All requests for specific environmental health information must be:

  • in writing
  • accompanied by a local map marking the boundary of the land
  • reasonable and specific in the questions asked.
  • accompanied by appropriate payment.

For more information and the current fees, see our contaminated land enquiries page.
