We are responsible for enforcing Health and Safety in approximately 3000 businesses across a range of premises including:
Our officers visit businesses to ensure employers are effectively managing the health, safety and welfare of their employees and that members of the public are not exposed to risks from the way work is carried out. If you are an employer, employee or self-employed you will need to know how health and safety legislation and best practices apply to your workplace.
The Health and Safety Executive publish a large range of health and safety guidance for businesses (this page opens in a new window) and our officers are available to give advice.
The Health and Safety Commission has identified five priority areas where major improvements need to be made in the workplace environment. This approach is the primary focus for our inspection and intervention activity. However, we do use a risk-based approach to judge how well employers are generally managing health and safety.

Please see more health and safety guidance on a range of topics such as Risk Assessment, Hazardous Substances, or Electricity at Work.
We also carry out special initiatives and health promotion activities based on government targets with the aim of raising health and safety standards in the borough.
