Cockroaches

Reasons for control
Cockroaches can carry diseases from dirty areas to areas that need to be kept clean such as kitchens. Diseases include dysentery, gastro-enteritis, typhoid and tuberculosis.

  • There are two common cockroaches found in this area. These are the German Cockroach (Blattella germanica) & the Oriental Cockroach (Blatta orentalis).
  • Cockroaches are large insects. The German cockroach is about 12mm long and the Oriental is about 22mm long.
  • The German cockroach is yellowish brown in colour and the Oriental is dark brown.
  • They spend most of their day hiding in cracks and crevices.
  • They are not fussy eaters and even eat hair and leather goods.
  • They are quite social insects and can often be found in groups.

Prevention & control

  • Good hygiene methods are essential.
  • Cover food sources.
  • Seal cracks and crevices.

Treatment

  • Spray, dust and bait insecticides can be used. Daytime hiding places must be found and treated with insecticide. Guildford Borough Council use a suspension concentrate containing 1% Deltamethrin followed by the application of a food matrix formula containing 2.15% w/w Hydramethylnon.
  • Cockroaches are very difficult to treat due to the persistent nature of the eggs.
  • Obtaining professional advice is recommended.

Contact the pest control officer for further advice and an appointment.
