What domestic refuse service do you offer?
Most properties in the borough are on a bag collection system. We will collect your bags of refuse once a week. Properties that receive these collections receive one roll of 30 refuse bags every six months. If you run out of these bags, you will need to buy some more. Flats are serviced by communal bins.
What day is my refuse collected?
Please phone the cleansing hotline 01483 444499 or email hotlinec@guildford.gov.uk
Where should I put my refuse to be collected?
We will collect your refuse bags from outside the front of your home. We can collect bags from your back door. This may involve our cleansing crew coming onto your property and collecting your refuse from your garden. It is helpful to let us know where you are going to store your refuse and also to make sure that it is stored in one place, which is the same each week.
Is there anything else I need to know about the service?
- All refuse should be in bags, which are tied tightly.
- Please don't put refuse in small plastic shopping bags which are very difficult for our crews to handle.
- Please do not put too much in each bag.
- We cannot collect the refuse if it is loose inside a dustbin.
- Please make sure that any sharp objects (for example, broken glass or razor blades) are double wrapped in newspaper. Mark clearly what is in the bag.
- Paint should not be placed inside your refuse bags. Please see our waste guide for information on how to deal with this type of waste.
- If the refuse collectors need to come into your garden, please make sure the gate is unlocked and there are no dogs running free.
- You must make sure that your refuse is ready to be collected by 6.00am on the day of your collection.
- Please don't place bags outside your property any earlier than 8.00pm the evening before your collection day.
Is a collection service available for sharp clinical instruments?
A home collection service is available FREE of charge from the 3 April 2006 for sharp clinical instruments (such as needles and scalpels)
To register for the service and organise delivery of a special yellow sharps box

All correspondence will be dealt with in the strictest of confidence.
What happens to the service on bank holidays?
For normal bank holiday Mondays, your collection day will usually move forward one day for that week. For example, if your collection day is usually Wednesday it will move to Thursday for that week. The collection day will then go back to the Wednesday for the following week.
What do I do if my refuse isn't collected?
If your refuse has not been collected, please ring our cleansing hotline on 01483 444499 or email hotlinec@guildford.gov.uk. We will sort out the problem as soon as we can.
Do you supply dustbins?
No, but we do supply one roll of 30 bags, twice a year. If you live in a block of flats larger wheeled bins are supplied. Please call the cleansing hotline on 01483 444499 for more information.
Why don't we have wheelie bins in Guildford?
Although there are many benefits to this system there are also many arguments against using these bins in the borough. Wheelie bins, and other related issues are being discussed as we review and develop our waste services. Also, residents have indicated their wish to have kerbside recycling services and these have now been introduced to most residents in the borough.
Do you collect bulky household items like wardrobes and tables?
Yes, we do operate a collection scheme for this type of rubbish, for more details please see special collection of household rubbish
Where is the nearest tip?
There is one community recycling centre (tip) within Guildford Borough, located on Moorfield Road on the Slyfield Industrial Estate. However, there may be an alternative community recycling centre within the county which is more convenient for you to visit, for a full list of site locations please see the Surrey waste info website.
For more information please see Slyfield tip opening times.
What can I do with my garden waste?
Foxes keep attacking the bags - what can we do about this?
You should make sure that items like chicken carcasses, bones and raw meat should be double wrapped in newspaper before being placed in the bag. You could also use a normal domestic dustbin and store the bags inside of the bin. The crew will then take the bags out of the bin on collection day. Remember, the refuse must be bagged up.
I know there are lots of different types of waste - who is responsible for disposal/collection each different type?
- Surrey County Council's main switchboard 0208 541 8800.
- Slyfield Civic Amenity site (run by Surrey County Council) 01483 532187.
- Private contractors - please refer to the Yellow Pages.
