What is a community recycler?

Community Recyclers are volunteers who are interested in the environment and recycling who encourage their local communities to recycle.

In 2003, a research project showed that our recycling behaviour is mainly influenced by our neighbour's attitudes and behaviour. Community Recyclers help us get the recycling message across.

What do community recyclers do?
Volunteers lead busy lives, so each individual decides how much time they spend on community recycling activities.

Those with little spare time help by putting out their kerbside collection boxes on the correct day and time. This reminds their neighbours to do the same.

Those with more time get involved in activities including:

  • Writing articles for their community, church, school or parish council newsletter.
  • Putting posters up on notice boards in their community.
  • Delivering leaflets to their neighbours.
  • Organising a Bring & Take or book swap.
  • Running a chipping scheme.
  • Helping on the day at events such as Compost Heaven.
  • Anything else you can think of!

Some community recyclers meet with other local groups with the same interests.  There are recycling groups in Wood Street Village, Puttenham, Onslow Village, Compton, Normandy and Stoughton.

Training and events
We organise free fact-finding visits to recycling facilities. Volunteers can see for themselves (and tell others) what happens to our recycling.

We arrange special training days and can send volunteers on courses if they are interested in specific areas such as composting.

Does it cost anything to be a community recycler?
Becoming a community recycler shouldn't cost you anything.  If you would like leaflets or posters designed and printed, then we can do this for you.

We send a regular newsletter to all community recyclers and organise 'get togethers' once or twice a year.
