Energy Survey
13 schools in the borough have taken part in an energy audit funded by Guildford Borough Council and Allianz. The reports provided each school with energy saving recommendations that can be used in their long-term development plan. Suggestions ranged from how to make their buildings more energy efficient to what type of renewable technology would be most appropriate for each school.
Merrow Church of England Infant School was one of the schools to benefit and act on the advice given in the report. The have since installed loft insulation and a more efficient lighting system at their school. This will reduce their school's CO2 emissions and help reduce their energy consumption.

For more information and advice on school energy audits or alternatively to arrange a free energy survey for your school please contact the climate change team.
Free carbon survey
The Carbon Trust has launched a campaign to help schools identify energy-saving measures and tackle climate change. They are offering schools an on-site carbon survey and offer a range of support. For more information please visit the Carbon Trust website (the page opens in a new window) or telephone 0800 085 2005.
Grants
The various funding streams listed below are available to schools who would like to apply for funding for energy efficient measures or renewable energy microgeneration technologies.
Salix
Salix Finance is offering interest-free loans to public-sector bodies, including schools, to invest in energy efficiency technologies. Schools who would like to apply for a loan for the following items should do so through their local authority.
- insulation
- boiler and lighting upgrades

For further information, visit the Salix Finance website (this pages opens in a new window).
Greening the borough grant
Schools can apply for the greening the borough grant which offers up to £500 for environmental projects. For more information please visit our greening the borough grant pages.
Low carbon buildings programme phase 2
The low carbons buildings programme currently offer grants for installing renewable micro-generation technologies in public sector buildings, this includes schools. For more information please visit the frequently asked questions of the low carbon buildings programme phase 2 website (this page opens in a new window).
Community sustainable energy programme
The community sustainable energy programme offers grants to schools or colleges wishing to install any of the renewable microgeneration technologies listed below:
-
solar photovoltaics,
-
solar thermal hot water,
-
wind turbines,
-
heat pumps,
-
biomass boilers.
Funding is also available for installing energy efficiency measures:
Energy efficiency measures need to be installed with the microgeneration technologies above. For more information please visit the community sustainable energy programme website (this page opens in a new window).
EDF Green Fund
The EDF Green fund awards grants to educational organisations who apply for funds to help cover the cost of renewable energy technology that can be used to produce green energy from the sun, wind, water, wood and other renewable sources. For more information please visit the EDF Green Fund website (this page opens in a new window).
The E.ON Sustainable Energy Fund
This fund supports community energy projects which either result in the production of energy from a sustainable source or which reduce the amount of energy used by a school. For more information please visit the E.ON Sustainable Energy Fund website (this page opens in a new window).
Scottish Power Green Energy Trust
This funding stream will grant schools up to half the cost of the chosen renewable energy technology. There is a maximum award of £25,000 but most projects receive around £10,000. For more information please visit the Scottish Power Green Energy trust website (this page opens in a new window).
