Sheltered housing is specially designed rented accommodation provided by the council, for older people who would like to remain independent, but prefer the added security that sheltered housing offers.
Guildford Borough Council Sheltered Housing Service has been awarded the Code of Practice Certificate of Achievement from The Centre for Housing and Support, ensuring that the services are:
-
of a high quality,
-
provide choice,
-
meeting current and future needs, particularly for older people,
-
cost effective,
-
professionally delivered and managed.
The aim of sheltered housing is to allow older and vulnerable people to remain living in their own homes.
Sheltered housing accommodation has self-contained flats with their own bathrooms and fitted kitchens. Communal areas include lounges, gardens, laundry facilities, disabled access showers, lifts and door entry systems. However, please note that staff do not carry out any care or domestic duties for tenants.
Guildford Borough Council staff are available during office hours to provide support to tenants enabling them to live independently, they also manage the day to day running of the building.
Social Services care teams are on site at our extra care schemes at Dray Court and Japonica Court and are able to provide some care and domestic support to tenants who are less able to manage on their own.
Our sheltered housing also meets the challenges set by the Government's "Supporting People" policy which was implemented in April 2003. The focus of this policy is on high quality service which promotes independence.
All applicants will need to have an assessment by a member of the sheltered housing team who will also be able to give you more information on the services available at each court.
