Household adaptations

If you or someone in your household is disabled, the Council may be able to arrange adaptations to enable the disabled person to continue to live there.

The adaptation is intended to provide better access in and around the house and to improve ease of use of essential facilities.

The type of works include:

  • Grab rails and handrails
  • Stair lifts or vertical lifts
  • Bathing equipment to access the bath
  • Replacement of bath with a shower
  • Ramps
  • Parking provision
  • Alterations to heating and lighting systems
  • Other necessary alterations

Minor works costing under £500 can be arranged directly with the Borough Housing Repairs Team. Grab rails and stair rails will be referred to the handyperson service.

Major adaptations (over £500) would need to be supported by a report from an occupational therapist or other appropriate medical professional.

In some cases, properties may be difficult to adapt and a transfer to more suitable accommodation may be suggested.
