Thanks to everyone who took the time to fill in our online questionnaire. We have collated all the responses and used them to inform a strategy for public art in Guildford Borough.

What is public art?
Much of the importance of public art is about the process. The community involvement and the different ways of thinking that arise from involving artists in the design process is as important as the end result.
There is no single explanation of public art, but Guildford Borough Council will use the following definition:
"Public art involves artists and craftspeople in the design of artworks in the public realm. The best public art is designed for its location, with the input of local people and with the artist involved at the earliest possible stage of the process."
Most of the public art you see around Guildford Borough has been funded privately through a scheme called Percent for Art. Percent for Art is resourced when companies building large developments give part of the total costs towards public art in the area.
Other projects are funded through legacies, trusts and foundations and occasionally through public funds.
