Public art can be found all over Guildford and its surrounds from the town centre and along the River Wey to outlying communities such as Ash.
We define public art as any work of visual art or craft produced by an artist or craftsperson sited in a location that is freely accessible to the public. The term public art not only encompasses publicly sited sculpture, painting, prints, photographs and crafts but also includes artwork incorporated into a wide range of projects, from playground designs, signage, street furniture, lighting schemes and landscape designs to the internal detailing of a building, its furniture or even its flooring – it can also include temporary projects such as multi-media or celebratory arts.
Per Cent for Art

Ever wondered why there are blue stained glass windows outside the shops on Swan Lane? Or how that poem got on the side of the hotel at the Stoke crossroads? It's because we adopted a Per Cent for Art policy in 1990 as part of our Local Plan.
By ensuring that a proportion of the costs of new developments is directed towards the provision of art and craft works, Percent for Art aims to:
-
improve and enliven our local environment
-
make contemporary arts and crafts more accessible to the public
-
support economic growth by providing work for artists and craftspeople and creating environments which attract visitors and investor
-
communicate, consult and actively engage with local communities in order to foster civic pride, a sense of place and local ownership and identity
-
encourage closer links between artists and craftspeople and the architecture, landscaping, engineering and design professions
