Weyfield Lantern Procession

After Guildford Borough Council set up this event in 2006, the Weyfield Lantern Procession is now an annual celebration with a different theme every year.  The procession is getting bigger and bigger, with Weyfield Youth Group, St Peters Youth Group, Weyfield Primary School and Lockwood Day Centre all involved. Weyfield Residents' Association now organise the project with support from the Council.

The Weyfield Lantern Procession is part of the Surrey Celebratory Arts Project.  The project aims to build a network of artists and communities skilled in celebratory arts practice to make celebrations a regular part of community life.  Celebratory arts is any public celebration that involves arts and crafts and can often include music, costumes, dancers and actors.

As part of the Surrey project, the artists have attended training sessions led by Strange Cargo, a professional celebratory arts company, and learnt how to make lanterns, giant figures and carnival costumes.  The Guildford artists have formed their own celebratory arts company called Street Processions.
