The Government’s Department for Culture Media and Sport encouraged every Local Authority to produce a Cultural Strategy. This is to provide a direction for cultural provision within the relevant area for the next five or more years.
Although this strategy was produced by Guildford Borough Council it is not a Council document. It is formulated through extensive consultation with people and organisations within Guildford Borough. The strategy aims to develop and to embrace cultural provision for the benefit of all. You will see that many of the proposals within the document can only be achieved through partnership working between organisations or the Borough Council encouraging others to achieve the desired outcomes.
Each year, since the Cultural Strategy was launched in December 2002, a survey of cultural groups has been undertaken. This has allowed us to produce an update of what has been achieved in the Borough towards the targets. It is now time to update our plans and move into the next 5 years endeavouring to continue this progress. Its cultural content is what has helped to make the Guildford Borough the pleasant yet vibrant place it is today. Over the 5 years period of this Strategy we have much more to look forward to, including the new Civic Hall, the Olympics and the Museum extension.
Guildford Borough Council has put together the Cultural Strategy Action Plan on behalf of all of the individuals and organisations that raised issues through the consultation process. We will continue to work with partners to achieve the actions as far as possible. It is our hope that future developments in our cultural provision will help to ensure Guildford Borough stays the hub for the South East and the special place in which we all like to live, work and spend time.
