The Summer Festival Blues

I’ve got the summer festival blues -
I’ve listened to the weather news.
Forget the darling buds of May
A deep depression’s on its way.

Shakespeare in the open air
Demands a summer warm and fair.
But sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines
Then everyone drinks beer and wines.

The actors sweat, their costumes smell
(And the portaloos as well!)
Fast changes in a sweaty tent -
And we call it entertainment?

Sometimes promised such a beauteous day
Base clouds o’er take us in our way -
So will we get an audience
To buy our seats with hard-earned pence?

Blow, winds, and crack your cheeks! rage! blow!
We just say “On with the show!”
Every year, come rain, come shine,
If weather’s foul or weather’s fine.

Our actors speak no more than is set down;
They’ll play the hero and the clown,
Speaking speeches trippingly
Though clouds shed water drippingly.

Our punters huddle under macs
While thunder rolls and lightning cracks
They laugh and clap and cheer us on
And that is why we carry on.

The elements may be unkind
But every summer you will find
That all the world’s a stage, you know,
With exits and entrances on we go.

One man in his time plays many parts.
And with deep devotion to the arts
The merry Pranksters come each year
To bring you all some summer cheer!
