Carol Hicks

Tulips by Carol Hicks  Peace by Carol Hicks

Carol first trained in Fine Art as a painter.  However, it was taking record
photographs of her paintings with a digital camera that drew her towards photography.

The ability to take a photograph, develop it with the appropriate software and print out the desired result proved compulsive; she has never looked back.  Since then in 2003 she  gained an Associate membership of the Royal Photographic Society and in 2007 became a member of Arena.

Carol's main passion in her photography is to celebrate the many symbolic qualities associated with flowers; 'Natures Gems', as the Victorians liked to call them.  By  focusing on the sensual, tactile beauty of flowers her images range from  the rich, painterly colours of life to the soft, delicate tones of peace and fragility.

Although she feels she can never do justice to the true nature of each flower, she hopes that her sensitive approach, encourages the viewer to stop and appreciate the many symbolic messages that flowers play in our everyday life.

For Carol the printing process is as important as the taking of the image.  The paper and image have a symbiotic relationship.  By printing with different archival watercolour papers she strives to find the right paper sympathetic to the emotional content of the image.
