After a lifetime in Banking Harry Cundell retired in 1978 by which time he had become obsessed with black and white photography. His search then and now was for simplicity in composition.
Harry says:
"Unfortunately about 7 years ago I had to give up traditional darkroom printing, but in my present digital life and Photoshop I have discovered an entirely new world.
It is, for me, a sheer delight to investigate the strange shapes and corners within the dark secrets of very small plants or roots. This urge to search has led me to use a digital SLR (Single Lens Reflex) camera which has become almost of equal importance to my flat bed scanner that for some five years has been the source of my root series.
At present I am using colour filters and mirrors silvered on the front instead of the back which gives me a new dimension.
Balance between the light and colour is vital and it is by stretching the limits that the right picture comes up. Rather like Cartier Bresson’s seeing eye, it is only there for a split second before the searching moves on. The result is, of course, a very personal touch."
