Vic Attfield

Photo: Big Issue by Vic Attfield

Vic is a Fellow of The Royal Photographic Society and Member of The London Salon.

Active interest in photography started in 1951 and is a keen exhibitor, also is called upon for lecturing and judging throughout the UK.

Examples of his work are included in U.K. permanent collections such as
the RPS Tyng Collection, also in Russia and Europe.

Over the years his work has mainly been monochrome prints of landscape and personal observations of everyday life.

Retired from the oil and petrochemical industry in 1990.

Originally working in monochrome and occasionally in colour he has confined his photography solely to monochrome over the past decade or more.   He feels that the introduction of colour gets in the way of what he is trying to communicate.   Also the graphic quality of black and white suits his type of subject matter.

Mainly these days he concentrates on what can be loosely described as ”street photography”.   He feels that with the increasing pace of life and quickly changing environment and lifestyles, the recording of these moments in time are becoming much more important than in the past.

Very few of Vic’s images are planned.   He rarely works on a project, preferring to wander around an area looking for interesting aspects of everyday life which he can interpret in a sympathetic or humorous manner.  That actual split second in time when the shutter is open can never be repeated - it is gone for ever.  This is the type of photography he most enjoys, finding situations, reacting to them and recording his feelings in the finished print.   Because of this his pictures are mainly stand alone images.

Children of Stratfield by Vic Attfield

In using 35mm film format he realizes the importance of filling the frame at the taking stage, so is very careful to include only those elements which give a balance within the frame and in conveying the mood of the subject.

A great believer in thoroughly knowing the functions of your equipment, Vic has been using the same manual SLR cameras (35 m/m Nikkormats with a  variety of lenses) for over 30 years.

Recently self published  “LOOKING”  a 160 page book with over 130 single page images selected from Vic’s archive of pictures from 1956 to the present decade.
