Atrium Photographic Exhibition

Photograph - Untitled 2 by Susan Green  Photograph: Spiral Stair by Margaret Ball

An exhibition of photographic prints by four members of Atrium, a small group of fine art photographers who meet on a regular basis to discuss and critique their work and ideas, their images are from darkroom, digital and alternative processes.

Photograph: From the Beach by Bronwen Brighton

Bronwen Brighton
Looking for Significance in the Apparently Insignificant: Nearly all of Bronwen's photographs are taken directly from observation.  Most of her work is in urban settings and she is generally interested in creating a successful composition as in the subject matter, though longer term themes do emerge.  In editing her photographs Bronwen inclines towards enhancement, rather than manipulation, and is keen to sustain the original photographic identity of the image.  Bronwen is an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society.

Carol Hicks
Flower and Vegetable Portraits: Carol originally trained as a painter but now uses the camera to compose images which reflect the sensitivity of her chosen subject matter.  Her passion is photographing natural forms, using simple upright compositions to evoke a sense of stillness and time, making the ordinary, extraordinary, by revealing their abstract tactile qualities.  Most of Carol's prints are on hand-coated archival watercolour paper producing individual images using archival inks.  Carol is an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society and a member of Arena Photographers from the South.

Susan Green
Intimate Room Sets: Susan creates large still life scenarios and scenes which are mysterious and intimate, using such things as chairs to represent people i.e. they already have backs, laps and legs.  Multiple exposures create movement and suggest a presence to otherwise inanimate objects.  Susan enjoys working in a series and to be able to refine an idea, and in the case of the chair, explore a world she has some control over.  Susan's prints are achieved with film and darkroom techniques, colour is introduced to the black and white photograph by the use of toners, sepia and gold in hand colouring.

Margaret Ball
Architectural Shape and Form:  For Margaret the appeal of photographing buildings is in creating an image from the many interesting aspects which can be found when looking at the subject selectively, making use of curves, angles, perspective and symmetry, as well as the repetitive elements of stairs, windows and columns.  Margaret is still using film, but is now using the 'light room' to tone and print her images using archival papers and ink.  Margaret is an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society.
