The Big Draw

The Big Draw Logo

Thursday 30 October 2008.  10am to 4pm in the Brew House

This October you are all invited to participate in 'The Big Draw: Memories of a Journey" at Guildford House Gallery.

The task is simple: draw your memories of a journey on a postcard, and either post it to the Gallery, or bring it along on Thursday 30 October 2008 to the Brew House - or come along on that day and create your postcard memory in the Brew House using the materials provided.

All ages and abilities are not only welcome, but will be actively encouraged to join in.

Memories are a recording of our lives and we take journeys everyday.  Whether a simple journey to work, or a memory of a journey in childhood, or memories of our journey through life.  Share your memories on a simple postcard and help us create a train track of drawings, which will be displayed in the Brew House.

Plain postcards will be available from the Gallery from 1 October 2008 or you are welcome to provide your own, but it must be standard regulation post card size in order to fit together on the train track.

This event is free and open to all.  No booking is required, but children under 10 must be supervised at all times by an adult. All materials will be provided.

The Big Draw is the UK’s biggest annual free art event. Initiated by the Campaign for Drawing, it encourages everyone to discover the purposes, pleasures and power of drawing. Big Draw events all over the country inspire inventiveness, challenge expectations and, what’s more, are fun. Using pencil and paper, charcoal and many other materials, the scale varies from small to large. The Campaign’s message is that no previous experience is required.

Drawing is a universal language, connecting generations and cultures, and underpinning our ability to learn, from early to later years. Drawing can transform us from passive consumers into active creators.

This is the eighth year of Big Draw. Since it began in 2000, it has encouraged over a million people back to the drawing board, and notched up two Guinness World Records for the longest drawing in the world (1 kilometre) and the greatest number of people drawing simultaneously (over 7000). Last year’s Big Draw resulted in 1400 events in 1200 venues.
