Doxa Sivropoulos Ceramics

Portrait Vases by Doxa

Doxa Sivropoulos studied Economics and Graphic Design and in the early 90’s, while working as a producer in the World Service of the BBC, began studying Ceramics.  She was fortunate to have excellent teachers, Paula Grey, David Cowley and Sarah Robertson amongst them, who guided her to Diploma level.

Nature and people fascinate her so when she started working with clay it was inevitable that these subjects became her main preoccupation.

Doxa grew up in Greece and again inevitably, its landscapes, art, myths and traditions influenced her work.

Different clays have different properties and colours and she likes taking advantage of them, enhancing them by adding oxides, stains, paper and other materials to create hues and textures. After the first firing she uses oxides, stains and sparingly, glaze. In most of her sculptural work she uses different clays fired at earthenware temperatures to provide a more natural background for the porcelain figurines or small portraits which are fired at stoneware temperatures as well as most of the vessels and plates.
