Lark Rise (this page opens in new window) is an exhibition of a recently (2009) commissioned set of new interpretative engravings intended to illustrate the classic 'Lark Rise to Candleford' by Flora Thompson - a charming memoir of her rural childhood. The Exhibition is also complimented with a series of contemporary photographs (c1880-1910), newly printed from the originals.
The artist, Sue Scullard (this page opens in new window), graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1983 and is a member of the prestigious Society of Wood Engravers. As an illustrator, print maker and designer her work characteristically seeks out and explores qualities of pattern and texture in her subjects. A master draughtswoman her command of perspective is second to none and inspires much of her work. 'Lark Rise to Candleford' is her latest series of illustrations. Previous works include 'The Canterbury Tales', 'The Lives of the Later Caesars' and Walter Scott's 'The Bride of Lammermoor'.
First published in 1945, 'Lark Rise to Candleford' was recognised from the start as a significant literary and historical document. It has the dual reputation of being both a 'story of the countryside' and a social historical study of country life in that moment of inevitable transition at the end of the 19th century.
