Hamid van Koten is a skilled furniture maker and a graduate of Glasgow School of Art, where he specialized in Product Design. Working with a local Glaswegian manufacturer, he has designed an innovative light shade made from recycled newspaper pulp. The design echoes the complex shapes of rough cardboard such as eggboxes, giving a soft, opaque light.
Hamid is a director of the VK&C design consultancy and has worked on a wide range of projects, including industrial, exhibition, interior, and architectural design as well as public arts commissions. He has exhibited in the UK and internationally and has won a number of awards. Hamid lectures on the History, Theory and Practice of Media and Design at Dundee University. He is a director on the Bodhi Eco-Project, a charity involved in building of an eco-village.
