Tree Frog in Rain – Best Open Projected Digital Image 2010 by Basil Groundsell of Farnborough Camera Club
The Surrey Photographic Association (SPA) returns to Guildford House Gallery for a celebration of its golden jubilee. Its biennial exhibition of photographic prints, projected digital images and slides is one of a number of special events, culminating with a fine dinner later in April.
The SPA is the umbrella organisation for 55 clubs in Surrey, West Sussex and Northeast Hampshire. It works to provide many services and activities to those clubs, including the organisation of this biennial exhibition.
The SPA is one of 15 federations throughout the UK which are members of The Photographic Alliance of Great Britain (“PAGB”). This exhibition is supported by the PAGB through its patronage scheme and PAGB medals and ribbons will be awarded.

Bollard and Empty Road” – Best Monochrome Print 2010 by Phil Drake of Richmond and Twickenham Photographic Society
The exhibition is open to any member of the clubs that are affiliated to the SPA. The prints shown in the exhibition will fall into three classes; Colour, Nature and Monochrome, whilst there are two classes in projected digital images and slides, Open and Nature.
All images on view will be the result of a rigorous selection process performed by three highly respected selectors from outside the region – Paul Keene FRPS, MPAGB, EFIAP/p, Vanessa Slawson FRPS, ABIPP, AFIAP, DPAGB and Tony Wharton FRPS, AFIAP

Borage Herb Flower – Best Open Slide 2010 by Martina Bennelick ARPS of Cheam Camera Club
Digital printing, in particular, has become a viable activity for those who previously found the requirements of “wet” darkrooms too onerous or impractical. The quality of digital cameras is now so good that even the smallest can enable the photographer to make fine images.
Greater emphasis on computer skills rather than smelly chemicals has encouraged younger folk to explore the hobby and photography has once again become an interest for all ages. The result has been that many of the region’s clubs have seen increases in membership, which in turn has led to higher standards and increased competitiveness in this exhibition and other club and inter-club competitions.

Lao Schoolgirl – Best Colour Print 2010 by Brian Collins of Kingston Camera Club
However, photographic clubs are not just about competition. Each of the SPA’s member clubs has a varied programme of events which, as well as competitions, include visiting speakers and workshops, all aimed at promoting the art of photography in all its forms. The clubs encourage beginners and advanced photographers alike, whether using digital processes or more traditional film.
