9 January to 27 February 2010

'With Scott to the Pole' (this page opens in a new window) from The Royal Geographical Society (this page opens in a new window) features a showcase of breathtaking images taken by Captain Robert Falcon Scott’s team during his ultimately doomed Antarctic journey.
The exhibition, formerly part of the Society’s contribution to International Polar Year, features photography of the continent’s astonishing natural beauty as well as preparations for Scott’s expedition, including the vital scientific work undertaken whilst preparing for their assault on Earth’s last great wilderness.
The exhibition will also provide a fascinating insight into lighter moments amongst Scott’s team, from day-to-day life on camp to the celebration of Scott’s birthday. It also includes the iconic image of Scott and his team at the South Pole, crushed to have discovered that Roald Amundsen and his team had beaten them to it by a matter of weeks.
Originally captured by Herbert Ponting, ‘camera-artist’ on the expedition, the images are taken from photographic albums donated to the Society by Captain Lawrence Oates’ family, following his death on the return journey from the Pole. These images will be illuminated with commentary from modern polar travellers, scientists and relatives of Scott’s team.
With Scott to the Pole will be on display at Guildford House Gallery from 9 January to 28 February, between 10am – 4.45pm, Tuesday to Saturday.
