Judith Browning was educated in Dorking and lives in Leatherhead. Moving to London in 1961, she was taught Tie-Dyeing by the late Anne Maile and Batik with Noel Dyrenforth. Judith now studies painting on silk with John Farmelo and others. The expression 'Resist Dyeing' covers all three disciplines and each helped her to develop her personal style.
Judith Browning contributed a chapter on her work in the St. Michael 'Great Book of Handicrafts' published in 1980 and has had articles published in the journals of both the Batik Guild (of which she is a founder member) and the Guild of Silk Painters.

In London she exhibited at the Barbican with the Society of Nativitists; at Whitechapel Art Gallery with the South East London Art Group, and at the Royal Festival Hall. She sold at various shops and galleries and for some years had stalls at craft fairs in London and the South East. She is a full member of the Surrey Guild of Craftsmen and exhibits with them.
Making silk scarves has been a constant throughout her craft career spanning nearly 40 years. In the past she made ties, bags, simple garments, hangings and curtains. She now concentrates on smaller pictures and cards as well as scarves.
Judith's scarves are dyed by a variety of methods. Most are colourful or more muted blends of random or more defined patterning. Each one is unique. She uses steam-fix dyes and pure silk, so the scarves are hand washable and each is finished with a hand rolled edge. The inspiration is often the countryside and sometimes she paints views, flowers, trees and animals on the large squares.
Guildford House Gallery stocks a variety of both long and square silks in a range of sizes and prices.
Please bear in mind that the range of stock changes daily, and inclusion of a picture on this site does not mean the item is necessarily in stock.
