Paintings by the artist Charles Sanderson
Guildford House Gallery welcomed London artist Charles Sanderson for his first solo exhibition in Guildford from 26 May to 16 June 2007.
Charles Sanderson studied at the Byam Shaw School of Art in Notting Hill Gate. He also studied under Ruskin Spear, the Portrait Painter from the age of 19, the same year he first exhibited at the Royal Academy, where he continued to exhibit extensively for the next four years.
At the age of 24, Charles Sanderson had his first solo exhibition, devoted to pictures of cacti and tropical gardens inspired by visits to the South of France in his childhood. He continued to stage many one-man shows in London and take part in group shows. His most notable exhibition to date was held in London’s Bond Street and opened by Sir Huw Wheldon.
Charles Sanderson was anxious to bring his work to a wider audience outside the capital. The Guildford House Gallery exhibition included his most recent landscapes and townscapes as well as still life paintings. Sanderson works in many media, including pencil, pen and ink, gouache, watercolour, oils and occasionally etchings and lithographs.
Charles says, “My landscapes are inspired by the ever changing and varied state of nature, in winter, spring and summer, particularly gardens in Surrey, Kew Gardens, Paris, Singapore and Malaysia as well as Monet’s Garden in Giverny. Working in all weathers helps me capture the variety and great beauty that nature has to offer. I like working on the spot as enables me to catch a spontaneity that can’t be achieved in the studio.”
Guildford House Gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 4.45pm, admission is free.
