face 2 face

4 August to 1 September 2007 in the Garden Room

Chris Hutchinson attended art school in his teens, but was unable to complete his studies. He took up photography as a hobby instead, and went on to spend most of his career in the transport industry.

Over the years, Chris built up a collection of some 9,500 slides - mostly summer and winter landscapes. However, he had always been interested in humour and portraits. Changes and improvements in technology prompted him in recent years to print some of these and exhibit them.

The exhibition is entitled face 2 face. Everyone has a face. Few people are satisfied with the one they've got. Children paint their faces at summer fetes. Women put make up on. Adults wear jewellery, worry about glasses and pluck their eyebrows. Men shave off their beards. The pictures in the exhibition are of people who have altered their faces, not just to project their personality or follow fashion, but to transform themselves and to take on another role. Other pictures feature man made faces, or those hidden in nature.

We hope the exhibition will amuse and confuse the viewer!
