Flowers in Fashion: Floral Frocks - 1840-1950
10 January to 21 February 2009
Marion May returned to Guildford House Gallery with more dresses and accessories from her extensive collection, to the delight of vintage costume fans. The exhibition Floral Frocks: Flowers in Fashion 1840-1950 explored the language of flowers and featured a number of dresses and accessories with floral motifs.
Since the Elizabethan era flowers have been portrayed in wearing apparel.
Amongst those included in the exhibition were an early Victorian Wedding Dress of ivory brocade with a pattern of irises, a blue silk Edwardian dress embellished with roses; a silk dress from the 1920s with a pattern of tulips and cornflowers, a 1940s summer dress incorporating orange chrysanthemums, an ivory brocade wedding dress from c.1845 with a pattern of irises and Chinese mazes, and an elegant Hyacinth Blue afternoon dress from c1909 with a collar of blue lace edged with blue satin and trimmed with gold thread.
