The Hidden Figure
6 September - 27 September 2003
An exhibition of sculptures by one of the foremost figurative sculptors working in Britain today. Jackson’s style, by his own admission is diverse. He has created works, which, satisfying his own visions, are both haunting and dramatic while simultaneously producing brilliantly realised figurative work in response to briefs for commissioned pieces of public sculpture.
Jackson has a truly international reputation and his outstanding talent as a figurative sculptor is undisputed. His public commissions are high profile, numerous and consistently impressive and he breathes movement and sensitivity into bronze monumentality.
The sculptures in this collection are a far cry from the formality of his public works. Towering, often black-robed and gold-masked, these figures have become something of a Jackson hallmark. The forms are harmonious and elegant and reflect his enthusiasm for music, history and the theatre and he brings to them a three-dimensional sense of living art.
Jackson is bemused by the accolades he receives for his work, yet one has the distinct impression that he would prefer what he does to be liked rather than not and certainly his sculptures are appreciated by an ever-wider and enthusiastic audience.
He unveiled an equestrian sculpture of Her Majesty the Queen, one and a half times life size in Windsor Great Park in the Autumn of 2003.
