Shakespeare Frozen in Time
Scenes of Shakespeare from the 1780s to the 1920s
The exhibition comprised of 66 framed pictures, etchings, engravings and photographs housing a number of contemporary portrayals of actors in Shakespearean roles.
The exhibition featured Falstaff in the Merry Wives of Windsor, played by Samuel Phelps at the Gaiety in 1874 and by Oscar Asche at the Garrick in 1911; Rosalind in As You Like It, played by Fay Davies at Manchester's Princes Theatre in 1907 and by Margaret Halstan at the Queens, Manchester, in 1908. There is Herbert Beerbohm Tree and Constance Collier as Caesar and Cleopatra at His Majesty's in 1906 and Forbes Robertson and his wife playing the same roles at the Grand in Leeds in 1907.
There was also an opportunity to see the same actors playing different roles. Henry Irving as Hamlet at the Lyceum in 1874 and as Shylock at the same theatre five years later.
Members of Guildford Shakespeare Company entertained visitors to the Gallery on Saturday 23 June between 11am and 2pm with bite-sized snippets of Shakespearean plays including Romeo and Juliet performed from the Guildford House Gallery balcony.
Also on display, were be the original illustrations by artist Paul Nelson, commissioned by RADA to illustrate their "When Love Speaks" CD with famous actors reading Shakespearean Sonnets.
